“I feel there is something unexplored about woman that only a woman can explore.”
The month of March is many things, we are shedding our layers for the warmer weather, we are setting back our clocks, and we are inviting Spring with open arms. But, most importantly we are celebrating Women’s History Month. This month highlights the contributions of women events in history and contemporary society.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t till 1978 till a group of women historians pushed forth this month that dates back to 1911, the year of the first International Women's Day, March 8th.
Going into March we decided that it would be important to recognize talented female Artist within the Washington D.C area and to give back to National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA).
Alysse Katherine is a Interior Designer & Fine Artist in the Washington, DC area. She spends most of her time being fashionable, creating beautiful art work, and working on interior design projects she’s most passionate about.
Join us to welcoming her into our community while celebrating International Women's History Month on Saturday, March 23rd from 2-6pm! Ten percent of proceeds made in store and online will be donated to NMWA to help fulfill their mission of serving a vital center for thought leadership, community engagement, and social change for women.

SB CHATS WITH ALYSSE KATHERINE
1)Where are you from and how did you get started on creating artwork?
I am originally from St. Louis, MO and moved to the DC area after college - about 4 years ago. I really didn’t paint much until I moved out here. I think I just felt really inspired by this new chapter in my life and by all these kick-ass, entrepreneurial women that I was fortunate enough to work with. Painting became my creative outlet.
2) What inspired you to create women figure artwork?
I’ve always been passionate about feminism and women’s history. It’s just been a topic that I’ve always gravitated towards. So when I first started painting, the femme artwork space just felt very natural to me. I also think the new wave of female empowerment that we’ve seen over the last few years has been a huge source of inspiration. I think my artwork has become a small way for me to connect with the movement.
3) What is the first thing you do to get your day started?
Before starting my day, I try and give myself 30 minutes every morning to do something for myself. Sometimes that’s going for a run or taking time to meditate. Other times, it’s just sipping my coffee watching the Today Show with zero distractions. Having time to just myself helps me to relax and focus.

4) What is your favorite piece of accessory you can't leave the house without and why that piece?
My favorite accessory has to be this pair of vintage, half-hoop earrings that my Grandmother gave to me. The earrings themselves are beautiful and unique, but it’s really the sentimental value that makes them so special.
5) What is one piece of advice you can give to our aspiring boss ladies like yourself?
In a world of instant gratification, I know this is easier said than done - but be patient with yourself! Everyone has something that they are struggling with, whether you are an established business or someone just getting started. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just keep at it and everything else will eventually fall into place.
