Issue N°19: SB Chats with Graphic Artist - Diana Johnson

Feb 6th 2020

“The life of the individual has meaning only insofar as it aids in making the life of every living thing nobler and more beautiful."

-Albert Einsteine

February is a month of transition. We are recharging from the busy Holiday season, setting New Year's intentions and goals and we are celebrating Love in many forms: Family, Friendship and Significant others.

Valentine’s Day, also called St. Valentine’s Day, holiday (February 14). The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. Many believe that the day may have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus. According to legend, the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and, by some accounts, healed from blindness.

Going into February we decided that it would be fun to work with a local Graphic Designer & Calligraphy Artist within the Washington D.C area and give you a chance to write a love note for your Valentine in a limited edition custom designed greeting card by Diana Johnson of Teluna.

Fast forward a few years later and Teluna is now a full line of hand-crafted products including greeting cards, art prints, clutches and home goods.

Join us to welcoming her into our community while celebrating Valentine's Day on Sunday, February 9th from 2-6pm! Get to know more about Graphic Designer Diana Johnson from the Q&A segment we did!

SB CHAT WITH DIANA JOHNSON

1)Where are you from and how did you get started on creating artwork?

I grew up in a small town in Maryland and I've had a paintbrush or pen in my hand since I can remember. I've always loved creating artwork, especially for others; anything I could paint on for someone else, be it corn hole boards, wine glasses, canvas, wedding decorations, I would take it all on and I loved it. One day I realized I could take that creative energy and start my own brand. So after a few years in graphic design, I left to start Teluna.

2) Where does the name 'Teluna' come from?

“Teluna” was created from the words “tela,” meaning textiles or canvas and “una” meaning one. These words together represent the idea behind why I started Teluna: to create designs that bring people together. As a maker, I strive to make the world just a little bit more beautiful. If I can make just one room a little brighter, one person smile, one space feel happier, then I know I've been successful.

3) What is the first thing you do to get your day started?

I like to start my mornings with a large cup of coffee and reading the bible verse my mom sends our family every morning. I follow that by sitting at my desk, surrounding myself with all the books, calendars, pens, etc. that I need for the day and writing my daily to-do list.

4) What is your favorite piece of accessory you can't leave the house without and why that piece?

I actually have three pieces I never leave the house without; my diamond earrings my dad gave me, my spoon ring from my brother's wedding and my necklace from my boyfriend. They each carry a special memory for me.

5) What is one piece of advice you can give to our aspiring boss ladies like yourself?

The advice I would give aspiring entrepreneurs is to figure out what works for you and really FOCUS. It sounds simple but I mean it as a sort of cast over all the parts of your life because no one will ever know you or your business like you do.

Focus on what needs to get done, each day and do it. Focus on your purpose and why you started your business. Focus on cultivating relationships with people you can learn from and give advice to. Focus on what you're good at and let your team execute the rest. Focus on surrounding yourself with people who believe in you. Focus on what helps you grow as an individual as well as your business and forget the rest. It's your life, your business, your unique journey, you can make it happen.
